The other night I got a call from my aunt with "bad news" about the Landis shower. Out of the 30 or so family members we invited, a total of 5 RSVP'd and two of those were my mom and sister-in-law. We decided this was not quorum for a baby shower, so its cancelled. People have suggested all kinds of reasons why I shouldn't take this personally, but I am terribly disappointed and embarrassed from the lack of support shown by my own family. Now I am nervous that none of Dan's family will show up to that shower on October 13. If nobody RSVP's, we will be hiring people of German liniage to come to the shower posing as a long-lost cousins that have traveled from the home country to share in this special day. No need to speak English or even bring a gift. Lunch will be provided. Interested parties should contact Dan.

Crap happens. And you are often related to those who crap on you.
Then you make your own family, whether it be a conscience decision of who to befriend or a little baby on the other side of the world who needs some love.
Maybe they will do something once the kid is here? We can be hopeful.
